Since 1989, Pulling Together Asian Women’s Group has constantly evolved to provide a wide range of exciting arts and cultural activities for female residents of Old Trafford and neighbouring areas.
In a fast and ever-changing society one aspect that has not changed is the fact that the group has continued to meet in the heart of Old Trafford each Friday from 5.30-8.30pm at Old Trafford Community Centre, Shrewsbury Street.
Previously, Pulling Together was open only to 11-18 year old young women. However, in November 2007 a unanimous decision was made to include women and children under 11, (if accompanied by their mums) so that family learning type sessions could be delivered, encouraging effective communication between families through creative activities which is always a great way to learn.
The dedicated commitment of the Management Committee, Workers, Artists and Volunteers all contribute in raising funds from various local and national bodies to provide a service which is absolutely free for users. Regularly, women comment on how attending a weekly group has helped them to gain confidence and raised their self-esteem by meeting women from similar cultural backgrounds, listening to inspirational speakers and by participating in a wide range of activities.
The strength of the group has been maintained over the years through members providing suggestions for projects and assisting in planning & programming activities, but above all, promoting the benefits through word of mouth to families, friends.
As well as arts & cultural activities, guest speakers are invited to provide information on community initiatives, education, health, welfare and benefits. However, workers are always willing to signpost women to the appropriate service provider or organisation.
